The Kosi Lakes System is particularly famous for the traditional Tsonga fish traps built to trap fish moving in and out of the estuary with the tide. The Tsonga people, who have made this land their home for more than 1000 years, are experts in fish traps and the construction of fishkraal. Spectacular views of these traps are available on the 4×4 excursion to Kosi Bay Mouth. Guests are also given an opportunity to get very close to them when doing the full day Boat excursion.
Both lake and sea fishing is available. Grunter & kingfish can be caught in the First Lake, spotted grunter & rock salmon can be found in Second Lake while ignobilis, big-eye kingfish and yellowfin bream can be found in the Third Lake.
Fly fishing and dropshot fishing at Bhanga Nek produces good catches of ignobolis, three spot pompano, green spot kingfish and garfish.
A permit is required for all fishing which can be purchased from the KZN EZEMVELO offices at Manzengwenya and Third Lake.
Guests need to supply all their own fishing tackle and equipment. Please discuss your stay with us first should you be particularly interested in fishing.
